There are moments when you know exactly what you should do.
Take a deep breath. Walk away. Don't send the text. Use the grounding exercise your therapist taught you. Set the boundary.
And yet… none of it feels accessible.
Instead, your heart races. Your thoughts become scattered. You say things you didn't mean. Or maybe you freeze completely.

Your brain is built for survival first
Your brain is constantly asking one important question:
Am I safe?
Long before you're consciously aware of a stressful situation, your nervous system is already evaluating your environment for potential danger.
This automatic process happens largely through the autonomic nervous system, which regulates functions like heart rate, breathing, digestion, and your stress response without conscious effort.
When your brain perceives a threat—whether it's a car swerving into your lane or an emotionally charged conversation—it activates your body's survival response.
The challenge is that your brain doesn't always distinguish between physical danger and emotional danger:
- A painful breakup
- Receiving devastating news
- A conflict with someone you love
- The loss of a parent
Your nervous system may respond to all of these with many of the same biological mechanisms designed to keep you alive.
Meet the amygdala: your brain's alarm system
Deep within your brain sits a small structure called the amygdala. Its job is simple: detect potential danger quickly.
When the amygdala senses a threat, it signals your body to prepare for action. Stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol increase. Your heart beats faster. Your breathing changes. Blood flow shifts toward muscles needed for movement.
All of this happens remarkably quickly.
From an evolutionary perspective, this system helped humans survive. The downside? It can temporarily make thoughtful decision-making much harder.
Why your thinking brain goes offline
The part of your brain responsible for planning, reasoning, impulse control, and decision-making is the prefrontal cortex.
Under intense stress, activity in this region can decrease while survival systems become more dominant. Research suggests acute stress can impair working memory, flexible thinking, and executive functioning.
You didn't suddenly become irrational. Your brain temporarily prioritized survival over complex thinking.
It can happen during grief, too
After my mom passed away, there were moments when even routine decisions felt surprisingly difficult. People would ask simple questions, and my mind would go blank.
At first, I wondered why I couldn't "pull myself together."
Looking back, I understand that my nervous system was responding to profound loss. Grief isn't only emotional—it has real cognitive effects.
Many people notice changes in memory, concentration, and decision-making during periods of intense grief. Those experiences don't mean you're failing. They often reflect how deeply stress affects the brain.
Breakups can trigger the same response
Many people are surprised by how physically painful a breakup can feel.
You might replay conversations. Constantly check your phone. Feel unable to focus at work. Know you shouldn't text your ex… and text them anyway.
Again, this isn't simply about self-control.
Research has found that social rejection and emotional pain activate some of the same brain regions involved in physical pain. That's one reason breakups can feel so consuming.
When your nervous system is activated, it's much harder to access the thoughtful, regulated version of yourself.
This is why coping skills can feel "unavailable"
One of the most common things I've heard during customer discovery interviews is:
"I know what I should do. I just can't access it in the moment."
That sentence captures something many people experience.
It's not that the coping skills disappeared. It's that your nervous system is highly activated. When your body begins to settle, your ability to think clearly often returns as well.
Regulation before reasoning
Many of us try to think our way out of stress. But when your nervous system is overwhelmed, your body often needs support before your mind can fully engage.
That might include:
- Slowing your breathing
- Grounding through your senses
- Gentle movement
- Stepping away from the situation
- Giving yourself permission to pause before responding
The goal isn't to suppress emotions. It's to create enough safety that your thinking brain can come back online.
A different way to think about emotional regulation
For years, many of us have been told to simply "calm down."
But regulation isn't about pretending difficult emotions don't exist. It's about helping your body recover from activation so you can respond with intention instead of reaction.
Recovery—not perfection—is the goal.
